£18,000 for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A former concrete technician who developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) has received compensation for his injury.

For more than 22 years, Paul Flintoff, 46, worked for a company that made concrete casts for use in the building of tunnels. During the 1980s, his work involved using hand-held vibrating tools. He was subsequently diagnosed with CTS, which can cause a burning sensation and numbness in the hands as well as pain in the forearms and back. Mr Flintoff’s former employer admitted liability for the injury and agreed to pay £18,000 in compensation.

Unfortunately, Mr Flintoff was made redundant shortly after receiving his settlement and is now afraid that he will struggle to get another job.

Regular exposure to hand-arm vibration can cause a range of conditions known as Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome, which includes Vibration White Finger and CTS. An employer must assess the risks posed by exposure to hand-arm vibration and identify and take measures to eliminate or reduce them so as to protect employees from endangering their health. In addition, the employer must provide information, training and ongoing health surveillance. Employers who fail to take the necessary precautions can be found liable to pay compensation for the injuries sustained.
